BoE Preparing To Adopt Transgender Policy

The Allegany County Board of Education is preparing to move forward with adopting a policy that will provide transgender students with access to suitable facilities- including bathrooms and locker rooms- that match their chosen gender identity. The Obama administration in mid May issued the directive to public school systems. The move, which affects all public schools and most colleges and universities that receive federal funds, has added even further into the country’s ongoing contentious debate over transgender rights.  During Tuesdays work session of the school board, board attorney Gary Hanna said that a ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court- which includes Maryland- as well as a recommendation from the Attorney General strongly suggests the local board adopt a policy…
