BoE President Robert Farrell Unconvinced Switching School Heating Systems To Natural Gas Is The Right Decision

January 24th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reported this week that plans are underway for coal boilers to be removed from Braddock and Washington middle schools and Fort Hill High School- transforming those heating systems to natural gas- however  School Board President Robert Farrell isn’t convinced this is the right decision.  Vince Montana, director of facilities for Allegany County Public Schools, said that the three are the only public schools in the state that are fueled by coal and adds that all of the boilers are original to the construction of the schools. The Braddock and Washington schools date to 1965. Fort Hill’s boilers were installed in 1936. Farrell, noting that Western Maryland is “coal country”, told the Times News that he would like to take a closer look to see if there is a way to continue to use coal fired heaters.  State Senator George Edwards, was asked about Farrell’s comments Wednesday on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show”. He said that the necessary changes that would be required to retain a coal heating system in all likelihood would be cost prohibitive…

I agree with Farrell, the cost alone would be out of sight,,since those old boilers; were put in,i m sure they have made many improvement s ,as far as lower operating cost and effiency.can you imagine what the gas bill s would be compared to local coal!
