BOE Requests Access To Funds For School Security

Even though a county appointed committee has not yet released its final report on plans for an enhanced school security system- the Allegany County Board of Education has requested access to the $190,000 the county commissioners have allocated for implementation. While the county commissioners maintain the the plan will be put into place and under control of the sheriff and the health department- the school board has objected to that idea, saying that school security is strictly a Board of Education responsibility. One reason the commissioners are unwilling to simply hand the money over to the school board is because they want any new security plan to include private schools as well as the public system. Although private schools are not under the jurisdiction of the county or the board of education- Commissioner Bill Valentine said the county has an obligation to try to make every student in the county safe…
