BOE To Meet In Special Session To Dicuss Capital Improvement Plan

The Allegany County Board of Education will meet in special session Friday morning to discuss the capital improvement plan- including plans for a new Allegany High School. Securing funding for a new high school could be a daunting task given the large number of requests from school systems across the state for capital funds; and the fact that Allegany County received funding for a new high school (Mountain Ridge) just a few years ago. The local cost to build a new Allegany has been subject to much debate this past summer, and it could range anywhere from $9 million to $20 million, according to a feasibility study.  The cost request was subject to much scrutiny by the County Commissioners in recent months; however the project was ultimately placed on the county’s CIP plan for 2015.  A former two time candidate for public office, Kevin Shaffer told the board recently that he believes they were not aggressive enough in their talks with the county- and that the board should have pushed for maximum local dollars, even if that means a tax hike for area citizens…
