Maryland Governor Larry Hogan today vetoed three bills, including one which would have raised the state's minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025.
Hogan had said the increase would place Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvanage, with West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Delaware all significantly lower. Mountain Maryland business interests testified the measure in both the House and Senate, saying it would deal a crippling blow to the local economy.
Still, the bill passed both chambers by a veto proof margin. It remains to be seen if those numbers hold up.
Hogan also vetoed legislation which would return control over the school calendar to local boards of education, and remove the regulation of alcohol and tobacco from Comptroller Peter Franchot.
Hogan called the latter two bills politically motivated.
