Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senator Pat Toomey announced Monday that he will not seek reelection to his seat in 2022 and that he also will not run for governor of the Keystone State.
The announcement means Pennsylvania Republicans will not have their most high-profile politician on any statewide ballot during the 2022 midterms in what is generally considered one of the most important swing states in the country. Toomey previously had expressed interest in running for governor and was considered the favorite to be the GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2022 if he had chosen to run for the office.
Toomey was one of the last in his party to announce his support for moving ahead with the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court before the presidential election.
During Monday's announcement, Tommey said he has no specific plans for his future, following the end of his term in 2022. He has been the state's junior U.S. Senator since 2011 and narrowly won reelection in 2016.
