Buckel Comments on Possibility of Easing Restrictions in Rural Counties

April 23rd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Faced with growing pressure to ease restrictions on businesses and social interaction, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said this week it’s “possible” that parts of the state might see a gradual reopening of commerce and recreation before others.  But he quickly cautioned that Maryland has not reached the point in its battle against COVID-19 where such a move would be prudent. Republican members of the House of Delegates have urged Hogan to dial back restrictions on commerce and recreation in more sparsely populated parts of the state. They said that western counties, the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland have had sufficiently low coronavirus infection rates that such a move would be warranted. Delegate Jason Buckel represents Allegany County and he tells WCBC News that there is some merit to considering a regional approach…

This is a something I’d expect from pandering Mckay, I thought buckle was smarter than this. Look at the populations around NYC to see what we should expect. First it hits the city center then spreads to the suburbs and then finally out to the rural areas. DC, Pittsburg, and DC have yet to reach their peaks and you can expect us to reach our peak 2-3 weeks after their peak. Opening early would not only be foolish but also dangerous. Allegany County has just experienced a weekend jump by 25 cases, so that alone argues that we are no where ready to ease restrictions. Wake up Buckle and stop putting your constituents at risk.

Past comments made by Delegate Buckel lead me to believe that he will follow others no matter what. Ken brings up a good point about the spread of Covid-19 and it’s affect on our local area.
I’m afraid that after the first 3 day period with no new reports of infection Buckel will be behind opening this area up completely.
In my opinion Buckel is not a leader. He’s as wishy washy as most elected people.

Mac, Even in the multiple sound clips WCBC is playing on air Buckel seems to flip-flop between wanting to open and wanting to wait. Very confusing.

Seems reasonable to me. Outside of a single nursing home our numbers seem to be flat or declining despite more testing. We need a plan from the governor on a timeline ASAP.

I agree with Mac and Ken! No way are ready to reopen. That would just invite people from downstate or from Pittsburgh to come here and further spread this virus. Although it seems most of our cases are limited to a nursing home , the virus came there from someone in the Tri State area. It’s out there! Be wary and cautious.

Those people wanting life to get back to the old normal must feel themselves to be invincible. They just figure that they will be immune from the virus, as opposed to those unfortunates who have gotten sick and those who have died.
I will refrain from mingling with the great unwashed for as long as is feasible.
Unfortunately for many this will be a great example of the Darwin Awards being passed out wholesale.

The sound clip of the gentleman form Garrett County where he talks about if they relaxed their restrictions and opened their businesses what’s going to stop someone from Allegany County saying ‘Hey Hon, lets go to the hen house for dinner’… Same applies to us here in Allegany County. If we relax our restrictions now (before our peak) what’s going to stop someone from Baltimore (still before their peak) from coming out here to visit the casino or to dine out?

A lot of people don’t seem to understand incubation times or waves of infections. What will it take for these deniers to understand?

A visit to Adams or Scarpelli’s is the only thing that will convince most of them shouting to reopen that they were wrong.
