Canal Place Allocation Currently Under Microscope

December 5th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

A proposal by Cumberland Councilman Nick Scarpelli for the city to allocate $80,000 in funding to assist financially struggling  Canal Place operation has met with a relatively chilly reception thus far. Canal Place is facing a budget deficit of around $125,000 in fiscal year 2015. Earlier this year, both the city and the county discontinued hotel/motel funding for Canal Place, saying it needs to become a more self sufficient organization. The council, in its current form, has two members  with conflicts prohibiting them from voting on Scarpelli’s proposal: Nicole Wagoner who works for the Fairfield Inn which is adjacent to Canal Place and often benefits from those who visit the tourism spot; and Mayor Brian Grim who sits on the Canal Place Authority Board. Councilman David Kauffman says that while he is open to considering the idea- he’s not ready to simply hand over $80,000 to Canal Place.
