Canal Place Authority Seeks to Expand Heritage Area

October 24th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Extending the heritage area was the focus of a meeting this week as Canal Place officials met with Richard Hughes, of the Maryland Heritage Area Authority. The authority is hoping to expand the Canal Place Heritage Area beyond downtown Cumberland- moving into Frostburg, Mount Savage, Georges Creek and Oldtown.  Expansion of the heritage area will be based on the transportation history of the region.  Officials hope it will increase tourism and lead too expanded opportunities for obtaining grants for local projects.  Authority Chair Andy Vick noted that executive director Dee Dee Ritchie has already met with representatives of the towns involved- and the initial response has been positive.
