Candidates For Office Emerge As Time To File For Run Comes To A Close

With the deadline to file to run for office in Maryland set for  9 PM Friday-  candidates for local office are starting to emerge in these final days. Two seats on the Cumberland City Council and three seats on the Allegany County Board of Education are open. The board of education race, which saw 11 candidates in the running in 2018, had six candidates on file at the close of the election office on Wednesday afternoon.  Incumbents Tammy Fraley and David Bohn, along with newly appointed Ed Root have filed. Also filing for a run for the school board, Linda Widmyer, Michael Leptic and former Fort Hill principal Steve Lewis.  One of the more interesting possible candidates remains former board member Wayne Foote. While Foote was removed from the board by the state in October for misconduct- there is nothing that prohibits him from filing to seek the office again. When contacted by WCBC News about his status, he said he hadn’t ruled out filing to run, but adds that he would not be surprised to see a write-in campaign mounted in his behalf. If that were to occur, Foote says he would not oppose the effort. Meanwhile, so far just three city council candidates are on file including Laurie Marchini, who was appointed to fill the vacancy created when David Caporale was elected county commissioner; Sylvester Young III and Robin Hood Constitution.  Incumbent Eugene Frazier told WCBC News Tuesday night that although he has not made up his mind, he is leaning toward running again. Election supervisor Diane Loibel said that according to election rules, the board of education will need seven candidates for the three open seats to be in the primary and that same number will be needed for the City Council race as well.     WOW, what a list. Funny how the deadline nearing never made the news until it was practically to late to do anything constructive.
