Car Crash on I-70 Sends Two to Hospital

On Wednesday at approximately 1:06 PM, troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to a three vehicle collision on I-70 East in the area of MD Rt 66 (Mapleville Road)

The investigation into the collision revealed that a 2005 Volvo truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer was traveling East on I-70 in Lane #2 (slow lane).  The truck tractor was being operated by Kent Nixon, 59, of Linthicum, MD.  Also traveling in Lane #2 in front of the truck tractor was a 2003 Mercury Sable station wagon being operated by Caterina Earle, 55, of Bethesda, MD. 

Both vehicles came upon heavy traffic and the truck tractor struck the rear of the Mercury Sable causing it to lose control.  The Mercury Sable then careened onto the right shoulder and overturned coming to final rest on the from MD Rt 66 to I-70 East.  After striking the Mercury Sable, the truck tractor veered into Lane #1 (fast lane) where it struck a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country minivan being operated by Dale Ehrhart, 76, of Laurel , MD.  The truck tractor then traveled into the grassy center median where it came to rest atop the embankment. 

Nixon and Ehrhart were transported to Meritus Medical Center along with Ehrhart’s wife, Karen Ehrhart, 78. 

I-70 in the area of MD Rt 66 was closed intermittently until 1500hrs for the removal of the vehicles.  Maryland State Highway personnel assisted with traffic control. 

The driver of the truck tractor was subsequently charged with Negligent Driving for causing the vehicle collision.
