Car Theft & Other Charges Land Woman in Jail

On Saturday, Cumberland Police responded to Brentwood Street for a motor vehicle theft and Michigan Avenue for a breaking and entering complaint.

Officers learned that a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville had been taken overnight from the Brentwood Street and residents on Michigan Avenue reported waking up and noticing the someone had forced open their kitchen door and stole items. Police issued an attempt to locate on the stolen vehicle and later in the day, a motorist travelling on Route 28 towards Cumberland observed the stolen vehicle and called police. Several officers responded the area and eventually located the vehicle on N. Mechanic Street. The vehicle was stopped and a female driver was arrested.

The woman was identified as 26 year old Stephanie Sue Leatherman. Officers also noticed that inside the vehicle that Leatherman was operating was a lot of merchandise that appeared to have been also stolen. Leatherman was question and admitted to stealing the vehicle on Brentwood and breaking into the residence on Michigan Avenue. She also admitted to entering several other vehicles overnight in that same area. The merchandise in the vehicle was confirmed as stolen by Leatherman from the Dollar General in Fort Ashby, just prior to being stopped by police. The West Virginia State Police were notified and responded and took custody of the stolen property.

Leatherman was charged with Burglary 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree, rouge and vagabond, motor vehicle theft and theft $1,500 to under $25,000. Additional charges are pending by West Virginia State Police.

She was taken before the District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond.
