WBAL reports Sen. Ben Cardin said there is "no justification for private ownership of assault weapons," Monday at a town hall held at an Annapolis retirement community, the Capital Gazette reports.
Sixty residents of the Ginger Cove retirement community gathered for a town hall meeting in which Cardin addressed the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, the Gazette says.
"People's lives lost by a white supremacist nationalist who believes in hate and acting out on hate," Cardin said. "We have seen this happen too frequently in our community, way too frequently. We saw it in Annapolis, the tragic loss at The Capital Gazette. We've seen it happen in individuals' acts of violence as well as in mass shootings."
"This is a national public health crisis," Cardin said.
"We have got to show the American people, and the world, that we are prepared to do everything we can to keep people safe," Cardin said as he called for more action.
Cardin said there is "no justification for private ownership of assault weapons," and that such weapons should be removed from the public.
Cardin's comments come after two weekend mass shootings killed 31 people and injured dozens more in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio in less than 24 hours.
The El Paso shooter was arrested after shooting into a crowded Walmart and the Ohio shooter was gunned down near Dayton's nightclub district.
Police in both cities are conducting investigations.

Your not gonna take away guns! You never will! That is a losing battle. Nobody is giving up their guns and it will lead to civil unrest if you push the agenda. You want to destroy this country, your headed in the right direction! Guns aren’t the problem, people are the problem. Society doesn’t need the government to protect them, they need to learn to stand up for themselves!

I know few people want to hear this but it was true 50 years ago and is true today…..Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Less understanding and more action, put the criminals out of my misery.

We are only kidding ourselves if we think restricting “assault weapons” will make any real difference.
Instead, what we need to do is put implement a system where people who are on the edge can get help and are prevented access to weapons.
The problem isn’t the guns, there were four people stabbed to death in Southern California yesterday. And while compared to the carnage in Dayton and El Paso, this does demonstrate that when criminally insane people are determined to kill, they will find a way.
More importantly, there seems to be no one who is claiming that terrorist have a right to weapons. What I am hearing is that many of us are saying that we want this insanity to stop.
Let’s come together, identify exactly how we can accomplish this goal and put the best plan in place.
