Chamber of Commerce urges continued support for the Opportunity Scholarship program

February 27th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to the Local Development Council urging continued support for the Allegany County Opportunity Scholarship program. The issue has become one of controversy following reports that the LDC had made the decision to utilize  a larger amount of the revenue generated by electronic gaming at Rocky Gap for local EMS services- and to phase out the scholarship program. The letter, signed by Chamber executive director Stu Czapski, addressed the importance of a college degree and the fact that attending college has never been more expensive. It is also noted that in the program’s history, 1,129 students at Frostburg State University and 3,885 students at Allegany College of Maryland received scholarships and chose to attend college in Allegany County.
