Changes Coming To How Rocky Gap Local Impact Funds Are Distributed

February 14th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Anticipated changes for use of the Rocky Gap electronic gaming funds would see the discontinuation of the Allegany County scholarship program for those wishing to attend area colleges.  Allegany County receives 3.75% share of the revenue accrued each month from electronic gaming at the Casino Resort with those dollars deposited in the Rocky Gap Local Impact Fund and then dispersed to local nonprofits by Allegany County. Officials are revising the way they distribute the funds, with the likely result being more money going to fire and EMS companies while closing out the opportunity scholarships for prospective Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University students. Not surprisingly, leadership at both Allegany College and Frostburg State have expressed concern and are urging the county commissioners to retain the scholarship program. John Short is Frostburg State’s Vice President for University Advancement, appearing on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” said the scholarship was proven tremendously beneficial for area students…

Allegany County Commissioners President Jake Shade addressed the issue during Thursday evening’s public meeting and said he is confident a resolution can be found that would salvage the scholarship program…

No, just no. Keep the distribution of funds the same way they have been.
Just what is the local development council that President Shade mentions? Is this yet another layer of bureaucracy or is this the much loved CEDC?
When originally set up they sold the casino as giving support for education so keep it that way.

The CEDC needs to stay out of education. Don’t they have there hands full already!
