Changes In Store For School System In The Coming Years

Summer vacation for approximately 8,700 students ended Monday classes starting in Allegany County Public Schools. As has become his tradition, Allegany County School Superintendent began the new school year by riding a bus along with students in the morning, this year to Westmar. Some changes are coming on the academic front as Maryland is one of 46 states that has agreed to incorporate new national standards into its curriculum. By the fall of 2013, an entirely new curriculum, known as the Common Core, must be in place at Allegany County Public Schools, but students must still pass standardized tests that are based on the current curriculum.  New standardized tests are being developed, but won’t be implemented until 2014. Maryland Superintendent of Schools Dr Lillian Lowery oversaw her first official “opening day” having taken the job at the start of July. She said she expects the school system to maintain its level of excellence- having been named as the top system in the nation four consecutive years- although she says there are challenges…
