Charter Schools Week in Maryland

May 3rd, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Governor Larry Hogan has issued a statewide proclamation declaring May 1 – 7, 2016 as “Maryland Charter Schools Week,” recognizing the contributions public charter schools statewide make to improve educational opportunities for students in Maryland. Across the state, over 18,000 Maryland students attend public charter schools.

“Public charter schools are an important tool in our effort to provide a quality education to every single Maryland student, regardless of where he or she grows up,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Our administration is proud to join with the Maryland Alliance of Public Charter Schools to recognize Maryland Charter Schools Week and the positive impact public charter schools have on countless students and families across the state.”

Governor Hogan is a steadfast supporter of public charter schools and has fought to enact positive reforms throughout his term in office. During the 2015 legislative session, the governor introduced and championed legislation to improve and expand public charter schools in Maryland for the first time in nearly a decade. In May 2015, Governor Hogan signed into law Senate Bill 595, the Public Charter School Improvement Act of 2015, which provided greater flexibility to public charter schools.
