Citizens Group Calling For Tobacco Tax Hike

Although Maryland has raised taxes on tobacco several times in recent years and border counties such as Allegany and Garrett are being hit hard by the loss of revenue- a citizens group is advocating for yet another hike. Each time the cost of a pack of cigarettes increases in Maryland, smokers locally have the option of traveling just a few minutes away to West Virginia or Pennsylvania to spend their money.  The effects have been felt on liquor and convenience stores and other places of business where cigarettes are sold. However, the bigger picture, according to the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative is the focus on the positive impacts on health, and not revenue streams…
