The city of Cumberland on Tuesday night approved the first reading of an ordinance that will transfer properties in the Rolling Mill area to a Frederick based developer to move forward with the proposed, but controversial Maryland Avenue Redevelopment Project. Located in the city's Rolling Milling neighborhood, the target site is situated between Maryland Avenue and Park Street and Emily and Williams streets. Plans for the 2.5-acre site include a hotel, large sit-down restaurant, fast service restaurant, convenience store and retail shops. On Tuesday the city approved the first of three readings necessary to finalize the transfer from the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation to the developer, Cumberland Gateway LLC. The vast majority of the nearly 70 properties have been secured, however there remain about a dozen property and home owners unwilling to sell. While the project has been discussed and debated for several years now, Mayor Brian Grim said that although its been a lengthy process he is happy with this latest step and optimistic the proposed commercial development will be a tremendous shot in the arm for the local economy…
