City Approves Grant To Fund Heroin Coordinator Position For City Police Dept

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council last night approved a grant from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention that funds a Heroin Coordinator position for the City Police Department.

Chief Charles Hinnant said that the position has been a part of the department since October of last year, and outlined some of the duties associated with the job…





Following the meeting, Chief Hinnant shared the latest available numbers on Heroin activity involving law enforcement.

Through June 22nd, there had been 20 fatal overdoses in Allegany County, with 14 coming in the city.  

All told, there had been 102 overdoses in Allegany County through the third week of June, with 75 coming within the city limits.

Cumberland Police had used Narcan 49 times to revive a suspected overdose victim, but Hinnant cautioned that number does not include similar action taken by EMS, hospital staff, or family members.
