City Approves Ordinance To Increase Sewer Rates

The Cumberland City Council voted Tuesday to approve the second and third readings of an ordinance to increase residential sewer rates by 7.5 percent, or an average of around $2.36 per month, so that the city can replenish its depleted sewer fund. The vote was not unanimous with Councilwoman Mary Beth Pirolozzi opposing the hike. She said that while she understands the city’s position and need to have adequate sewer funds- now is not the time to further burden city taxpayers…

    If they are doing this to get a decent ROI on the water system as they claimed, they should also look at the city’s public housing. They spend $170,000 to $200,000 per unit to build apts and townhouses and then rent them for $400 or so. Private landlords get that much for units costing $30,000. And, unlike the welfare housing, the private property pays taxes.
