City Continuing Work To Find A Solution To Washington Street Bridge Says Mayor

December 30th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

While there are some specific announced details and time frame structures essentially in place to address the closed bridges on Cumberland and Fayette streets- there is far less certainty when it comes to the future of the Washington Street span.  Repair work is continuing on the Fayette Street Bridge with the span expected to be reopened to single-lane traffic in a matter of weeks. Meanwhile the city of Cumberland and CSX Transportation have agreed on terms for the removal and replacement of the Cumberland Street Bridge with the hope being that the project can go to bid in 2021 and demolition and construction can begin in 2022.  The Washington Street span poses the most challenges.  Mayor Ray Morriss has said that federal funding has yet to be secured for that bridge- and to date CSX has shown little interest in rebuilding the Washington Street Bridge. Despite any number of obstacles and having no concrete answers at this time, the mayor says the city will continue to work to find a solution….

The obvious solution is remove the bridge completely, and replace it with a scenic overlook of the track below. Tourists will flock to it, stone benches could be built into it, CHCO can put a monument to the death of a city on it, and the problem will be solved. Think how much more revenue Sheetz on Greene Street will make, selling sodas, gas and hot dogs to the additional tourists. It will comfort the tourists who thought they would get to ride a steam train.

Or just remove the old bridge and fill in the gap & bury the tracks. The heck with CSX. Why cater to lying, thieving s.o.b.s? They can take their trains the long way around. But the city ‘leaders’ would rather kiss their butts while CSX kicks us all in the teeth.
