It may only be a formality when the Cumberland City Council conducts a public hearing tonight on the proposed land swap that could lead to a new Allegany High School being located at the Braddock Campus of the Western Maryland Health System on Seton Drive- as it appears as though all involved parties are ready to move forward with the plan. The council will hear from citizens tonight about a proposal that would locate a new Allegany in the vacated Sacred Heart Hospital building; and would also see the city donate 40 acres to land near Constitution Park to the health system. Two weeks ago, David Cox, superintendent of the Allegany County Board of Education, asked the city to sign off on the plan, telling the mayor and council that he needs a decision quickly so that the board can comply with deadlines set by a state funding agency and the Maryland Board of Public Works. Meanwhile the board has aggressively sought public support for the proposal, sending out an “open letter” to the media and the public outlining why exactly the former hospital site could be ideal for the new school. Board member Laurie Marchini, on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” Monday said that it’s a unique situation considering the number of entities involved…
