City Council to Award Memorial Campus Demolition Contract

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council expects to award a contract to demolish the old Memorial Hospital by the end of the month. Seventeen contractor bid packages to demolish the building were received last week  revealing proposals ranging from a high of close to $4 million from Cumberland’s Carl Belt Construction to a low of $1.5 million from Ritter & Paratore Contracting out of  Utica, N.Y.  No announcement came during last night’s regular council meeting, which featured a lite agenda. Initially, the city was going to enter into a deal to lease the medical buildings and would keep them. The lease arrangements fell through, resulting in the city’s decision to raze the medical buildings as well. Mayor Brian Grim said it was disappointing that no other viable uses could be found for the former hospital building. As far as the future use of the land, Grim said the city will careful not to develop anything that could prove disruptive to that neighborhood…
