City Council Votes to Opt Out of Sprinkler Mandate

August 30th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Following in the footsteps of the city of Frostburg and Allegany County- Cumberland City officials voted this week to opt out of a state requirement that all new one- and two-family dwellings be equipped with automatic sprinkler systems. The Mayor and Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve an ordinance that gives homebuilders the option whether to install sprinkler systems — at least until 2015, when counties and municipalities won’t be able to opt out of the requirement anymore. Allegany County commissioners voted earlier this month to opt out of the requirement, but they are considering an incentive program to encourage residents to install sprinkler systems on their own. Frostburg also has an incentive program. Councilman Harold “Butch” Hendershot said he wants to see Cumberland move in that direction as well.
