The Cumberland Mayor and City Council has begun the conversation about the possibility of reducing the special tax on downtown businesses. The Downtown Development Commission was created nearly 40 years ago to pay off a $1 million bond obtained to turn Baltimore Street into a brick-covered pedestrian mall. Approximately $230,000 in taxes are levied each year, and with the bond being paid off more than two years ago, many downtown property owners would like to see the tax eliminated, or at least reduced. While there has even been some discussion about abolishing the DDC, City Councilman David Kauffman said that really isn’t on the table at this point- the real issue is what services, if any would have to be cut if the tax is reduced…
