City Firefighter Staffing Being Reduced

It didn’t take long for the good will of a new contract between firefighters and the city of Cumberland to dissipate- as local 1715 union President Ken McKenzie has announced that staffing is already being reduced. McKenzie, in a statement issued Monday morning, said that within a day of the signed contract copies being distributed, the Chief of the Cumberland fire department sent an email to the supervisors advising them the department would be cutting minimum staffing to 12. McKenzie said during the negotiations the city informed union representatives that "someday" they would like to look at making the department smaller if other options were in place to handle the calls. He says it appears as though that by “someday” the city meant immediately. He says its unfortunate the city is addressing budget matters by way of reducing safety for its citizens…
