A 40-year-old of Cumberland, Md., was sentenced Monday to 30 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender, U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced. Richard Shawn Edwards was previously convicted of second-degree rape in 1993 in the Circuit Court of Allegany County. As a result of that conviction, he was required to register as a sex offender. Further, Edwards has been convicted on three separate occasions in Mineral County for failing to register as a sex offender. An investigation by the United States Marshals Service, the Ridgeley Police Department, and the Cumberland Police Department, revealed that in late 2014, Edwards moved from Ridgeley to Cumberland without updating his sex offender registration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Camilletti prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. Chief U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided.
