City Of Cumberland To Honor Past Elected Officials

October 19th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

During the past several years, the citizens of Cumberland have celebrated several historic milestones that marked important passages in the establishment of the city.  In 2011 citizens marked the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the National Road, in 2012 the 225th birthday of the founding of the City was celebrated along with the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the current City Hall.  During this year of 2013, the 100th anniversary of the first production of water from the Lake Gordon Dam will be noted.

These milestones and many others witness Cumberland’s growth from a small gathering of log cabins at the base of Wills Mountain on the Potomac River, to the prosperous city we are today.

It is at this significant juncture that the current Mayor and City Council would like to pause and reflect on the leadership that has brought Cumberland to this point and honor the men and women who chose to give their time and service for the betterment of our community by serving through elected office. On Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 12:00 noon, a short open house and program will be held in the City Hall rotunda to recognize past mayors, commissioners and council members for their contributions.  The program will be open to the public and citizens are encouraged to attend.  A special luncheon for the officials will follow in the Council Chambers.
