City Receives Update On Combined Sewer Overflow Efforts

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council this week received an update on combined sewer overflow efforts. City Engineer John DiFonzo and Dennis Hasson of Whitman Requardt and Associates detailed the $24 million project that would separate storm and sewer runoff. A court order requires the city to eliminate combined overflows by 2023. Since 2005, there have been 500 million gallons of the mix enter the North Branch of the Potomac River. Being considered is storage of combined overflows that will be held until they can be treated at the wastewater treatment plant. Construction of a storage tank and pumps would take place in the Mason Recreational Complex, eliminating use of the basketball courts for up to two years.
