City Removed Confederate Flag From City Hall 21 Years Ago Next Month

Two weeks ago the Confederate Flag was taken down from the front of the state house in South Carolina. Ironically next month will mark 21 years since the city fathers in Cumberland agreed to remove that same flag that had been hanging in the rotunda in city hall. It was the summer of 1994 when members of the local NAACP approached the mayor and council expressing opposition to the flag being displayed. After several weeks of public debate, the council, on August 16th of that year announced that it had been agreed to remove the flag. There are only two surviving members of the council that made the decision. Harold “Butch” Hendershot tells WCBC News that it was not a popular decision in some circles…
