City Resident Defends County Employee’s Right To Free Speech

With a county employee's job status remaining in limbo after six months- Cumberland resident Kenneth Wilmot discussed the right to free speech when he addressed the Allegany County Commissioners at a recent public meeting. Wilmot was discussing the suspension of county employee Kevin Shaffer after Shaffer used a vulgar word during a commission meeting in early December. Shaffer used the word, as he had at previous meetings, while making a point during the portion of the meeting open to citizen comment. A veteran of the U.S. military, Wilmot said he doesn't approve or care to hear Shaffer's use of vulgarity, he firmly believes he has the right to say it. Wilmot took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and that includes freedom of speech. Shaffer has been on leave since the incident, and Wilmot said it never should have reached this point…
