Since its closure nearly 30 years ago- the former East Side School has been a concern for Cumberland city leaders. Easily visible from westbound Interstate 68 on East and Reynolds streets, the deteriorating building has been a major eyesore for the city since it closed in 1984. Numerous proposals for the building and the location have been discussed but have never materialized. The building was purchased by a San Francisco based developer in 2009 with plans to convert it into town houses, but neighborhood opposition killed that effort. It appears as though now, by way of a grant, the city is ready to take action. During this week’s meeting, the mayor and council approved a resolution to seek financing to acquire and demolish the building.
