Since its closure nearly 30 years ago- the former East Side School has been a concern for Cumberland city leaders. Easily visible from westbound Interstate 68 on East and Reynolds streets, the deteriorating building has been a major eyesore for the city since it closed in 1984. Numerous proposals for the building and the location have been discussed but have never materialized. The building was purchased by a San Francisco based developer in 2009 with plans to convert it into town houses, but neighborhood opposition killed that effort. It appears as though now, by way of a grant, the city is ready to take action. During this week’s meeting, the mayor and council approved a resolution to seek financing to acquire and demolish the building. City administrator Jeff Rhodes said it was determined that the East Side project would be the best use for the grant…
