Not everyone optimistic about economic development study

May 9th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

Some skepticism has been raised quietly in the past week concerning the Cumberland City Council’s contracting with a New Hampshire based firm to conduct an economic development strategy for the city.  Cost of the contract is a little more than $54,000 and although most of that is grant money, some are questioning whether the city will get any real bang for the bucks.  In meeting with the mayor and council this week, a representative for RKG said that while the company will offer proposals they believe will work, he emphasized that there are no promises of success.   One council member questioned what information an outside company can offer, that local officials, economic development representatives and citizens don’t already know.   Councilman David Kauffman, who said he supports the decision to retain the services of RKG, says that getting all of the players to buy into the final plan put forth will prove challenging.
