City Sewer Rate To see 20% Increase

Although the city’s sewer rate will be increasing by 20%, the Cumberland Mayor and City Council approved a fiscal year 2014 budget Tuesday night that includes no tax hikes, or increases to the water and trash rates. Cumberland’s mayor and City Council gave the nod on Tuesday for the $36 million budget- and that will see sewer bills for resident’s jump 20%. City Administrator Jeff Rhodes has said that the increase will negate a projected $1.1 million deficit in the sewer fund. It will add approximately $7 to a resident’s monthly bill. According to budget figures disclosed, the average sewer bill, which is around $35 currently, will rise to about $42. Mayor Brian Grim acknowledged that the 20% hike is significant; it will help the city address a current deficit, while allowing the city to maintain the tax rate and water and trash rates at current levels…
