City To Allow Open Alcohol Containers Downtown During Hooley Pub Crawl

The Cumberland mayor and city council voted Tuesday to allow open alcohol containers downtown during the Hooley Pub Crawl on Saturday. In addition, some streets will be closed. City Administrator Jeff Rhodes said the area where open alcohol containers would be allowed is bordered by Bedford, Mechanic and Harrison streets and Queen City Drive, but also would include Queen City Pavement, the Gulf War Memorial and Canal Place. Cumberland Police Capt. Greg Leake said a number of streets will be closed from noon to 2 a.m. with parking prohibited. The measure was passed as part of the city’s routine consent agenda, which usually doesn’t invite comment- however one elderly resident protested the action saying that it sends a bad message…
