City’s Top Priority Continues to be Blight

July 1st, 2015 by WCBC Radio

Addressing blighted properties continues to be a top priority of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council. The crackdown on blighted properties was made easier last fall when the council approved an ordinance that expands on an existing policy concerning the city’s ability to cite property owners for “unsightly conditions” . City Solicitor Michael Cohen said that the change will give the city greater latitude in terms of enforcing cases where home owners are neglecting or “trashing” their yards, porches or driveways. The city receives almost daily complaints about blighted properties city-wide, and City Administrator Jeff Rhodes says that while a major challenge, the city has been aggressively attacking the problem.
