ClosetMaid lays off 45 workers

January 13th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports ClosetMaid has laid off about a quarter of the workforce at its Garrett County manufacturing plant, a company spokesman said Friday. About 45 of the 175 employees at the plant, located in the Northern Garrett Industrial Park, were told Thursday they were working their last day, David Baldridge, a company spokesman, said.

Baldridge said he didn't foresee future layoffs, and affected employees are subject to recall based on customer demand.

ClosetMaid is a producer of home storage and closet organizer systems. Workers at the Grantsville plant, which opened in 2007, produce laminate wood storage products. Prior to Thursday, the plant operated on two shifts. That has been reduced to one, Baldridge said.

Of those laid off, 23 reside in either Garrett or Allegany County, Alex McCoy, Garrett County's director of economic development, said.
