November 20th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

The chief ranger for the C&O Canal National Park sat in on Tuesday's meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority.

Brad Clausen said the federal shutdown affected the department, and said that the continuing sequester is looming large as 2014 approaches…

Clausen told the Canal Place board that the park service budget has been cut 17 percent since 2011, and positions are down by 22 percent.

He did confirm that the department tried to close the Cumberland end of the toepath during the shutdown, only to find the baracade tossed to the side on a daily basis.
