Commission Recommends More Possible Changes To Public Employee Retirement Benefits

The special state pension’s commission wrapped up its work last week, recommending more possible changes in public employee retirement benefits. These included shifting half the cost of teacher pensions to local school systems and asking the attorney general to take a hard look at the legality of reducing cost-of-living adjustments for current retirees. The idea of shifting a portion of the teacher’s pensions to local governments has been discussed for several years in Annapolis, and has gained momentum with different forms receiving committee approvals during the General Assembly session. Governor Martin O’Malley is on record as saying he opposes shifting the financial burden of teacher pensions to the local school boards…
