The Allegany County Commissioners took action this month to adopt a code designed to establish a more equitable distribution of funding for the county’s fire and rescue departments. There have been questions about allocation and placement of resources and coverage areas- also of concern is the fact that the county system is not manned 24/7. Allegany County has 13 ambulance services, eight of them fire/EMS, while four are EMS only and one — Cumberland — is a paid department. Allegany County Emergency Service director Dick Devore has been working with the volunteer departments and the city in the past year to create a new system. He says the new system will present an annual allocation based on data that can be measured as opposed to what appears, to many, to have been an arbitrary system which shortchanged some departments…
