The Allegany County Commissioners of Allegany County, recognizing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the community’s small businesses, announced on Thursday a new fund to provide the very best, rapid service to the businesses affected most. These micro-grants can be used by businesses to pay rent, mortgages, or utility costs for businesses. The fund will be launched on March 27. To be eligible, the business must:
- Have a physical address in Allegany County, Maryland
- Must be in good standing with the State of Maryland
- Have no more than 15 full-time employees (as of March 1, 2020)
- Demonstrate a loss of business revenue of 50% or more related to COVID-19
- Have no pre-existing tax liens or legal judgments
- Cannot be any of the following entities: home-based businesses, churches or religious institutions, banks & financial institutions, investment/real-estate entities, government agencies

As long as the county can afford it, this is a great/needed idea. Our restaurants and bars are getting crushed

Yes, and when we get through this I seriously doubt that people will flock back out in large numbers. It will take a while. This type of event hits an economically challenged area like Cumberland even harder. It’s possible that some of our local establishments will not make it.
