Commissioners Appoint New Animal Control Board

August 13th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Commissioners voted unanimously last week to appoint four new members to serve on the Animal Control Board in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to the welfare of domestic animals in the county- however it was not without some protests.  During the consent agenda portion of the last public meeting, in which several items are approved with no discussion, the commissioners approved as members: Dr Judy Thelen; Debra Amyot; Judi Sweitzer; and Susan Eisel. After the vote however Peggy McDanial, a longtime member of the County’s Animal Welfare Society; and Kenneth Wilmot, who has been an outspoken critic of the board and management of the Animal Shelter for several years, both suggested the process was not conducted fairly. They both maintain that  there was an obvious bias toward appointing those who advocate for a “no kill” philosophy. Commissioners President Mike McKay said that he believes that “politics” have been taken out of the selection process. McKay was quick to point out that he had actually asked Wilmot to apply for a position on the board.
