Commissioners Approve Agreement To Hand Over Animal Shelter Operations

Although a lease agreement still needs to be finalized, the Allegany County Commissioners and a local animal welfare organization on Thursday approved an agreement for county shelter operations to be handed over to the Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation. Dick DeVore, the county’s director of the Department of Emergency Services said it has been a lengthy process and he is encouraged with the arrangement. It was pointed out that the current employees will be given every opportunity to retain their positions under new management. The local nonprofit organization has stepped forward during the Allegany County Animal Shelter’s philosophical move away from euthanasia and has a capital campaign under way to construct an 11,000-square-foot adoption and care facility near the site of the current animal shelter.
