Commissioners Approve Amendment To County’s Animal Control And Shelter Laws

The Allegany County commissioners Thursday approved an amendment to the county’s animal control and shelter laws that would allow the county to hand over shelter, and possibly control operations, to an animal welfare organization consisting of volunteers. Dick DeVore, the county’s director of the Department of Emergency Services, said that the action simply is the first step in the process, and allows negotiations to begin with the Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation. The local nonprofit organization has stepped forward during the Allegany County Animal Shelter’s philosophical move away from euthanasia and has a capital campaign under way to construct an 11,000-square-foot adoption and care facility near the site of the current animal shelter…
