Commissioners Approve Study of Volunteer Fire Departments

After watching both the Baltimore Pike and McCoole volunteer fire departments run into serious financial troubles over the past two years- some of it involving illegal activity- the Allegany County Commissioners want to see a better system developed to monitor the financial accountability of volunteer fire and emergency medical services companies.  The idea is to protect those services by bolstering public confidence that donated monies are being used for fire and rescue operations.  Dick  DeVore, the county’s director of emergency services, presented a request to the commissioners during a meeting last month calling for a county-funded study of financial accountability in the volunteer departments. The study will include recommendations to guard against bad practices which led to the floundering of two volunteer departments over the past few years…
