Commissioners Ask Local Lawmakers To Oppose Attempts To Institute PlanMaryland Initiative

Allegany County officials have asked local lawmakers to “oppose any attempt to institute components of the PlanMaryland initiative. The implementation of PlanMaryland in its present form- according to the commissioners-  represents significant threats to local autonomy and to the economic future for jurisdictions outside the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The county has joined other rural jurisdictions in forming the Maryland Rural Counties Coalition. It includes Allegany, Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties, although other rural counties have expressed interest in joining. At its Tuesday work session the commissioners heard a presentation from its planning department- outlining specific concerns about PlanMaryland and the adverse effects it could have on the region.  Commissioners President Mike McKay said this is clearly an attempt at control, rather than environmental safeguards….
