The Allegany County Commissioners are receiving some backlash for an action taken last week awarding a construction contract to a company’s whose bid came in a half million dollars higher than another company’s. To design and build a new shell building at the Barton Business Park, the commissioners- by a 2-1 vote- awarded the contract in the amount of $3.5 million to Belt Construction. Gary Imes, President of Lashley Construction in Frostburg says his firm’s bid was just over $3 million. County Commissioner Bill Valentine tells WCBC News that because of the nature of the project, the bidding process was handled a bit differently to offer flexibility for the county, especially considering possible changes in the project during design and construction.
