Commissioners Expected To Finalize Budget Thursday

The Allegany County Commissioners expect to finalize its FY 2013 budget Thursday afternoon- and there have been last minute efforts on the part of the local teachers union to persuade them to reconsider the proposed funding allocation for education. At a recent county budget hearing, Evan West, who spoke on behalf of the Allegany County Teachers Association, said he is most concerned about the county’s decision not to fund the board at maintenance of effort (MOE) levels.  Commissioner Michael McKay said that realistically the only way the commissioners could fully fund the school board’s budget request would be to increase taxes- something all three county officials strongly oppose. In fact the county actually decreased the property tax rate last year.  West said that those revenues lost via the decrease in the tax rate, could have been better used for education…
