Commissioners To Consider Incentive Program For Installation Of Sprinkler Systems In New Homes

After opting out of the program last month, the Allegany County Commissioners plan to consider an incentive program to encourage residents to install sprinkler systems in new homes, but they're not going to mandate it – at least not until the state forces them to. Commissioners voted 2 – 1 late last month to opt out of state legislation that requires homebuilders to install automatic sprinklers in new one- and two-bedroom homes, including mobile and modular homes. Sprinklers will be mandatory statewide in 2015. Incentives recommended by staff include a $500 property tax credit for three consecutive years, and a free building permit, which could cost around $500, depending on the size of the home, said David Eberlym county administrator…
